In every state and city, the cheapest car insurance broker for one driver and one type of car will not be the cheapest for another. Some insurance brokers are cheaper for middle aged and elderly drivers and others may offer the best prices for youthful drivers.

A few companies offer better prices for licensed drivers with negative histories, but are not competitive in other areas. It is important to be mindful of the benefit to insurance companies when licensed drivers are unaware they qualify for better rates elsewhere.

Aside from driving records, driver milestones have the biggest impact on insurance premiums. Since insurance brokers treat milestones differently, the best way to save money on car insurance cost is to research individual broker prices as milestones approach by using insurance comparison websites.

It would be very difficult to regularly conduct this type of personalized research without the internet.

Milestones that Affect Car Insurance Prices

  • Career change: A new job that requires more or less driving will affect the rates offered by some insurance companies. Professions that require transporting clients or customers will require higher liability protection which will cost more.
  • Residence change: Insurance rates for some states can be four to five times higher than others depending on individual state laws. Within regions, certain zip codes have higher rates than others.
  • Years of driving experience and age: Newly licensed drivers who are 18 to 25 years old have the highest rates almost everywhere. Drivers under the age of 18 typically cannot purchase car insurance independently. As driving experience increases with age, insurance rates will decrease each renewal date following a birthday. The 26th birthday usually comes with the biggest reduction in a car insurance premium.
  • Marital status: Married people often get lower rates just because they are married in addition to qualifying for multi-car discounts.

Do’s and Don’ts for Finding the Cheapest Car Insurance Brokers

  • Do go to your state insurance website to see if there is a comparison function for insurance rates.
  • Do search one or more commercial insurance comparison sites in addition to official state sites who offer online comparison.
  • Do research insurance company reviews to evaluate other customer experiences.
  • Do online searches before renewal date when any insurance milestone is in the near future?
  • Don’t assume that friends, co-workers and family member’s good deals are the same good deals for you.
  • Don’t wait until a premium increase notice arrives. Shop before the milestone passes.
  • Don’t take for granted that the company with the best rate in one location will be the best in another.
  • Don’t be afraid to try a new company. Many insurance companies with great prices only offer insurance in certain areas.
  • Don’t wait until you feel like you are paying too much money. Perform advance research now to be sure you are paying the least amount possible from the beginning.
  • Don’t be taken in by claims made by television advertisements. The familiar “Save 15 percent in 15 minutes” applies to very few consumers, if any at all.

The internet is the best friend of all committed comparison shoppers. The vast range of car insurance premium prices is proof that timely online comparison shopping is still only performed by a small percentage of insurance consumers.
