Like insurance rates for any other car, there are no standardized rates for the Chevy Volt. Insurance rates for this cutting edge car will depend on multiple factors such as year of purchase, the owner’s personal driving record, driving habits and eligibility for discounts, among a host of others.

Chevrolet, the makers of the Volt use the tagline, “Electric when you want it, gas when you need it” to set the car apart in the increasingly competitive hybrid market today. Named the 2011 North American Car of the Year and 2012 European Car of the Year, the Volt has a range of standard features and specifications that has made it into a popular car with drivers and automobile critics.

The Chevrolet Volt: Looking at a Green Future

According to U.S. News Best Cars, the 2012 Chevrolet Volt ranks at 8 out of 19 top upscale midsize cars. Voted one of the best hybrid cars in the market today because of its fuel economy, the 2012 Chevy Volt gives an impressive 35 mpg in the city.

While the Volt is popularly known as a hybrid, Chevrolet calls it an extended range electric vehicle that uses gas to make its own electricity. It has two sources of energy: an electric battery and onboard gas generator. And indeed, people driving the Chevrolet Volt don’t have to worry about the driving range of the car since its gas engine goes to work after the car’s rechargeable battery dies. Chevrolet claims that this complex engineering allows drivers to travel up to 375 miles on a gasoline tank. So no nightmare scenes of waiting in the dark because you forgot to fully charge the car battery!

The Chevy Volt is a four-door hatchback sedan that runs smoothly and quietly. Its high-quality futuristic interior with top of the line features such as pre-heating and cooling, and sporty handling makes it a fun car.

The Volt’s easy charging is affordable and quick.

Additionally, The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), has given it the highest overall crash test scores, making it a very safe car to drive.

Which details define the Chevrolet Volt?

According to Edmunds, the Volt 2012’s standard exterior features include heated mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, and keyless ignition/entry. Its futuristic interior is made up of high quality materials and offers automatic climate control, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and six-way manual front seats.

It’s communication technology, lodged in a central console includes Bluetooth, OnStar, includes Bluetooth streaming audio, voice control for phone and audio functions,  Smartphone integration, and a six-speaker sound system that houses a CD player, audio jack, iPod interface, USB connectivity, and a touchscreen. The previously included Bose speakers are now an upgrade feature.

The Volt’s energy usage screen in the central dashboard is a useful element that shows which source of energy you are using and how many miles per gallon you are getting, besides giving you some easy-to-follow handy pointers on how to save more gas.

Some of the other upgrade features include leather upholstery for the seats and steering wheel, and heated front seats. The rearview camera and parking sensors cost extra as do the navigation system and digital music storage capability.

The soul of the Volt, the battery pack can be completely recharged in as little as three hours using either a 120 or 240-volt outlet. Additionally, braking adds to the battery charge of the Chevy Volt. The Volt has an electricity driving range between 25 and 50 miles, and can be driven at speeds up to 100 mph.

What are the cons of the Chevrolet Volt?

At an average price of a little over $39,000, the Volt is an expensive car. Seating only four people, the Volt with its plug-in technology and cached hybrid status does cost a pretty penny to own.

Since the Chevy Volt requires premium gas for maximum fuel efficiency, this is going to add to the driver’s expenses. Even though the car gives great mileage, the gas bill can add up quickly if you have long commutes.

The central console with touch sensitive buttons is complicated and looks cluttered. Unlike today’s control panels for all things mechanical that are largely intuitive, operating the Volt buttons will require some manual reading!

The location of the battery pack in the back cramps the already limited space. The battery pack and design of the car’s rear allows only two people to sit in the back, without much head or legroom. The battery pack also eats into the trunk space, making it difficult to transport much cargo. For this reason, the Volt is unlikely to be the choice for families.

The power cords needed for charging are chunky and take up precious space in the already small trunk. They are not easy to handle and take time to put away.

Chevrolet Volt: The Important Markers for Insurance

The Chevrolet Volt has received high ratings for its performance, safety, and appearance, both exterior and interior from car reviewers and owners. It has been called a good-looking dynamic car with a powerful hybrid engine. But like any other expensive car, Chevrolet Volt’s insurance costs can be on the higher side.

While there has been no definitive trend towards pricing in the car insurance industry with respect to new technology-cars such as hybrids, some insurance companies are extending discounts to owners of environmentally friendly vehicles. In some cases, the discount can be as high as 5%. Additionally, you can avail a list of other driver discounts such as good student, safe driver, seniors, new car discount, multiple policy discount, among others to reduce your insurance bill.

Other discounts for Chevrolet Volt models are also available if your car has a passive restraint system, anti-lock brakes, or is equipped with an anti-theft device. These will help you save on your premium.

The Chevrolet Volt also has some available safety features to keep you safe and save you money on car insurance. The Chevrolet Volt model you choose can affect the total price you pay for insurance coverage. Car insurance rates are higher for newer models, but driver age can also impact the costs.

Where you live can also have a huge impact on Chevrolet Volt insurance rates. Drivers in Los Angeles might be paying more than drivers in Indianapolis.

Which other methods can help you lower your Chevy Volt insurance bill?

Car insurance rates are dictated by a number of factors such as your driving record, your age, occupation, and location, besides the details of the car you drive such as the make, the model, year of manufacture etc.

Car insurance rates are also affected by a series of factors totally unrelated to cars and driving. Some of the following suggestions might help you lower your rates and monthly premiums.

First and foremost, do your due diligence. Shop around and get quotes from competing insurance companies. Make sure you compare all the different quotes, point by point. Understand all the provisions, exclusions, terms, and conditions.

Make sure every added agreement in your negotiation with your insurance company or agent is put in writing.

Research the financial bones of the insurance companies you are seeking quotes from. They should have enough wherewithal to be able to meet their commitment to their clients.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your monthly insurance bill is to increase your deductible as much as possible. Be aware that your financial situation might change so keep your deductible at a manageable amount.

If you are buying an old car or are driving one, avoid carrying comprehensive coverage. You might be paying more than necessary to replace your old car.

Ask if your insurance company offers any special rates for hybrids or green technology cars. Increasingly companies are recognizing this growing sector and are rewarding drivers willing to try new environment-friendly innovations that form the very identity of the Chevy Volt.

Another very useful option provided by car insurance companies is the low mileage discount. If you drive very few miles per month, your insurance company will give you a reduced rate. The assumption is that if you drive infrequently, you are less likely to be in an automobile collision and therefore, are less of a risk for the insurance company.

Shop around for discounts. Insurance companies are constantly offering various discounts to stand out in the insurance market. From discounts for good driving to being a good student, early signing discounts to vehicle equipment discounts, as well as new car discounts, you will be surprised at the various insurance incentives available.

Insurance companies offer lower rates if you bundle your insurance needs. In other words, if you purchase insurance for your home, life, automobiles, watercrafts, or off-road vehicles from the same company, they are likely to extend substantial savings to get your business.

Even though it seems obvious, it needs to be said: drive carefully! An accident-free, traffic ticket-less record will help you get better insurance rates.

Raise your FICO scores. Your credit score is used by insurance companies to determine your ability to pay in a timely manner. If you have a low credit rating, insurers will mark you as a risky undertaking. This will lead to higher insurance premiums and if you have very poor ratings, it could even lead to the denial of your insurance application.

If you follow these steps, you are likely to find an insurance company and an automobile insurance policy that will meet all your coverage needs at an affordable price.

How to Get Insurance for the Chevy Volt

Nowadays, most people use the Internet to do their research and find a range of insurance services to meet all their needs. They can chat with insurance agents online and get instant approval for their application.

But along with the convenience comes the need to be wary of the different online companies that seem to have emerged overnight. Sometimes they can be less than exemplary in their dealings with clients. So be diligent about your research as you try to get the best insurance deal available for your Chevrolet Volt.
