Important facts to know...

  • The Motor Club of America does not offer standard auto insurance
  • The benefits offered by the Motor Club of America may be included in your current car insurance coverage
  • It may be beneficial to have auto insurance and a Motor Club of America Membership

It can be quite easy as a consumer to get the wrong impression around a service such as what the Motor Club of America (MCA) provides.

Does their service provide you primarily with auto insurance? If you were in a car crash if you were a member, would they be able to indemnify you for the losses you have suffered?

The Motor Club of America offers a broad range of benefits, and those benefits can be seen as extensive, but they are not automotive insurance.

You want to think of the Motor Club of America as a service that is going to be a complement to your auto insurance policy, not a replacement.

The Motor Club of America was founded in the early 1900s and has been helping drivers all across the United States ever since, growing its services, its member base, and so on.

What does MCA offer?

The view of Motor Club of America is not to be an auto insurance provider. Instead, what they want to do is to provide drivers all across the country with a suite of services that are a value-add. They offer the following:

  • Quality services
  • Listening to their members
  • Learn and quickly adapt to the marketplace

Becoming a member of Motor Club of America is quite simple. It all starts by visiting their site or reaching out to one of their representatives. Once you do this, you will be enrolled in one of their plans, suite of services, and get all of the benefits that go along with it.

MCA offers two distinct roadside assistance plans: the MCA Security Plan and the Total Security Plan. Both plans offer the following services:

  • Unlimited emergency roadside assistance
  • Emergency car rental
  • Emergency room reimbursement/hospital cash benefits
  • Lodging, food, transportation reimbursement
  • Accidental death benefit
  • Worldwide travel emergency coverage

In addition, with the Total Security Plan, you get long-distance towing, recreational vehicle coverage, and optional accidental death & dismemberment coverage.

Both plans also offer legal representation for moving violations. If you were to be in a serious motor vehicle accident and charged with something like vehicular manslaughter, MCA would pay your legal fees and well as paying your cash bail up to $500.

What’s the difference between MCA and auto insurance?

Motor Club of America provides their one essential service, emergency roadside assistance. If you are a member of this group, you are going to be able to carry that member identification card around.

If you get stuck while you are on the open road, reaching out to them is going to let you get assistance when it is needed most.

The membership is also going to provide you with some other benefits as well, such as covering a towing to an auto repair shop, if needed. The membership is also going to give you an advantage in the event you end up in the hospital due to an accident that is covered.

You get $150 per day, for up to 365-days, with membership.

Auto insurance is simply far more extensive regarding the coverages it provides when compared to Motor Club of America.

When you have auto insurance, you are going to have liability coverage with the option of adding comprehensive and collision coverage.

These options are going to provide you with coverage for the value of your vehicle and more if you end up in an accident.

If you end up damaging the property of another individual as a result of the accident, that will be covered. Medical needs will also be covered up to a much higher limit than the $150 per day given by MCA.

Do you need auto insurance coverage?

To drive a vehicle in almost every state in the U.S., you have to have an auto insurance policy. It is a requirement, and it is entirely separate from being a member of the Motor Club of America.

You can drive around all day without a membership to the MCA, but when you do not have auto insurance, you will not be able to get a loan to buy a car, register a car, and so on.

The only coverage that exists if no auto insurance is carried is what is known as underinsured and uninsured motorists coverage.

Each state has minimum liability limits (bodily injury liability insurance and property damage liability insurance) that have to be maintained on an auto insurance policy in the event you get in an accident with someone who has no insurance, or insurance that is too minimal to cover the damages.

How do you find the best auto insurance company?

You are in control as a consumer when you are shopping for auto insurance. Every car insurance carrier is going to be different regarding how they price out risks, what they see as a high-risk driver versus not.

They will have different premium charges associated with various vehicles and driving habits, all based on their risk appetite profile and rates filed with the individual state departments of insurance.

As a consumer, what you want to do is to price out all of the different coverage options that you have available.

Think about the various coverage needs that you have, the limits that are going to be required on your part to gain that level of comfort.

Once you shop the market, whether it be by making phone calls or using comparative rates online, take action and bind that auto insurance policy where you see the value.

The Motor Club of America is different in that they are offering a membership. They have no equivalent in the market regarding what they are bringing to the table.

You may be able to get an endorsement on your auto insurance policy to cover emergency roadside assistance for a premium that is far less than a full membership to the MCA.

Auto insurance policies are completely separate from the Motor Club of America memberships that are offered. You certainly can have a car insurance policy and a membership card with the MCA, but you want to make sure you are getting the real value from doing that.

As a consumer, shop the market and see what all of the various auto insurance carriers can offer to you.

They may be able to provide you coverages, along with the same benefits and suite of services you’d get by complementing your policy with a MCA membership. It is your call, your coverages, and ultimately, your move to make as a consumer.
